Please help me rename my dog.

OK universe. Very funny.

On February 1st my friend, coach, and mentor Marie Forleo wrote about how she got a new puppy. Honestly when I read this my 1st thought was…
Umm, Hey lady? When do you have time for a puppy?
See Marie’s got a cool coaching mastermind program that just launched, a live retreat for same coming up that she’ll be flying to, (I was in this program last year — so fun!!), and then the normal 50 other things she’s up to, and I bet there’s stuff that she doesn’t even know about yet. But what I do know is that she’ll roll with it and it will all work out.

A few short weeks ago, on my last one on one call with Marie for 2009 – we were laughing and having a great conversation. Then the question came up about whether or not I wanted to go for another year of Mastery. I said, “No thanks, I just want to take it easy.”
Yeah right.
Here’s where the universe’s sense of humor enters in.

My new pup needs a name.

If you were in the office with me today you’d hear me yawning a lot – I was up a bit late, and early.
Due to a series of fortunate events Chris and I got a puppy! on Saturday 2/6. She’s a basset hound with the long ears of course. 9 weeks old, weight about 12 pounds. It was a rescue situation. Playful puppy accidentally scratched my friend’s 10 month old toddler, now he won’t get within 5 feet of her without crying. But — My gain! Her current name is Dixie but it’s not quite right. I’m taking name ideas. She’s a quick learner and already taking well to crate training at night.

Chris and I weren’t sure about becoming puppy parents, and I was very hesitant. So we spent the weekend test driving her. I’ve owned bassets before, it wasn’t like it was new to me but what I wanted the most for her was to have the greatest puppy into dog experience as possible! At first I worried about how much she was going to be alone during the day, but then we realized that I can have time with her in the morning before work, Chris is going to be with her until late morning – he starts work late, and then we can drop her off at his brother’s to have play dates with their basset hound Hope. Yep, when she was brought to us things just started unfolding. Dixie (the pup’s name for now) and Hope met yesterday and per Hope’s reaction it’s very exciting to have a new puppy. Plus, Chris’ brother Frank was gladly giving me puppy care advice – they are good at it, like it’s no sweat….about a year ago they had a litter of basset pups from Hope’s mom Samantha. It was a lot, but they also got a huge amount of joy in return from the experience too!

I look sleepy. Happy but sleepy.

I look tired. Happy but tired.

So yes, so much for “coasting” in 2010.

I’m so happy we said yes to this.

But I need your help – since I can’t think straight, please send name ideas. I’ll be busy chasing after a wriggly pup, remembering first hand the joys of puppy breath, learning in’s and out’s of crate training, discerning which puppy whine means, “I need to go outside” or “Please scratch my head. I need love now”, and taking a nap on the couch after dog walks.

And…oh yeah. Rollin’ with whatever comes up.

She is so adorable…Dixie is one lucky pup to have found you, cause you will take the best care of her always…I have been trying to think of a name for her and thought your the fairy godmother to us all so how about calling her either Pixie or Cinderella (cindy for short)…Since now she will live the princess lifestyle… :) Whatever her new name will be it will be cool like her parents..

Ohmigosh… you too?! It’s like puppy season or something! (Can you tell I want one?!)

    First – she’s super cute!!
Second – names..names… Do you prefer human-sounding names or not so much? How about wriggles? Since you said she’s wriggly. ;) Hmm.. oh and I love Berrigirl’s idea of Pixie or Cinderella.

Gah you’re going to have so much fun with this! :)

Linda she is ADORABLE! She is a lucky, lucky girl. Oh! How about Lucky? I do like Pixie :) Congrats to you and Chris!

You are so lucky and I can smell the gorgeous puppy smell from here in the UK! My family have owned Bassets all our lives and rescued quite a few and I have always changed the names of the rescues as soon as I got them.

Last year we got two gorgeous puppy sisters and they look the same colour as yours and we named them Lucie and Lottie.

The name I would choose for your gorgeous girl would be Lucie because she looks just like my Lucie at that age.

Any ‘biting’ they do is just part of puppy play and having got two at the same time, our two often playfully ‘nibbled’ one another and us in play, but Bassets are never vicious and make the best family pets, but you must be very patient with Bassets because they are stubborn natured!

If you haven’t had a Basset before and you want more info, please email me. HAVE FUN with pup!!

PS: Sorry, but in my haste to reply with my name choice, I didn’t read all of your message and I now see you have had a Basset before and your brother in law also has a Basset.

Our Lucie gets called Lucie Locket at times (like the children’s poem about Lucie Locket lost her pocket…..

    Have lots of fun!

    How about naming her Joy?

I also just wanted to say that I love your Whitmore cartoon. It is super cool.

@ Sylvia – Thank you so much. I’ve adopted rescues before. Pretty much full grown adult dogs. I’ve had a Lucy, a Sam, and an Emmett. This is my 1st mini pup. I will definitely be writing and asking for advice. LOVE IT!

  • Linda Eaves

Heather, Nathalie, Alisa — Pixie is in the lead for sure.
I keep thinking of those Pixie Stix candies when I read that!
    :D

Ryan – Joy. Very nice, thank you.

Linda, if you have already had a Lucie Basset Hound, how about the name Maisie for your pup? Maisie is a sweet name for a Basset pup and it looks nice when written and sounds nice when calling your dog.

Please let us know when you have decided on her name… whatever name you choose, your pup will grow into!

  • Linda Eaves

Sylvia – Maisie is a great name too. Might have to get another pup with all these suggestions. I will be sure to let you know what I decide.

  • Laura Eggerichs

I like food names a…why wouldn’t I? Like Cinnamon or Canela (spanish for cinnamon) I know she’s not all brown, but she could be Cinnamon Sugar!

  • Linda Eaves

    I like that Laura!

The puppy is adorable, indeed Linda! There is a plethora of puppy names you can find in some websites, such as
    http://www.puppy-names.com
    favorite-puppy-names.com
    I like the name Remy

  • Linda Eaves

Matthew that is great! Will check out the site. My fella Chris is calling her Codi – short for codependent. [shakes head]

  • Sylvia

    Hi again Linda

I’m sure I saw an email from you late last night and I can’t find it now! I’m not sure about Chris calling pups Codi though…. she is far too pretty to be called that!!!!

I’m so pleased your gorgeous Basset pup (is she called Cordelia?) is settling in well with you and look forward to seeing more videos of her as she grows up because they grow very quickly as you have already found out!

You may already know this Linda, but having been a lifelong Basset owner, with many Basset friends… any breeders and vets have always told me only to take pups on very short walks until they are about 10-12months of age as their heavy joints can get easily damaged because Bassets have ‘plates’ in their legs that don’t knit together until they are around a year old and walking can damage them and cause a Basset to limp.

I’ve always been told, especially from vets, to keep Bassets off stairs too because too much weight on those little front legs can also damage their joints and as they can reach upwards of 70+ pounds, it’s too much weight on joints going down the stairs, so we’ve always had a stair gate to keep them off the stairs.

I hope you will have 12-15 years of pure joy with Cordelia as she is beautiful. Lucie and Lottie’s Kennel Club names are Isabella and Isadora but my husband often calls Lucie and Lottie, Lucinda and Pixie Lot (she’s a pop singer) and they also answer to Daisy and Maisie (which is what I was going to call them) until I realised they sounded too similar and they wouldn’t know who I was talking to… but they answer to anything to be honest and it’s more about the tone of my voice!!

    Nite nite for now.
    Sylvia, Lucie and Lottie xx

I linked a couple of videos of Lucie and Lottie to your YouTube clip (rich88b) which was my son’s YouTube before he left home, so I use it to upload Basset clips, and my son racing his motorbike and some clips of concerts I go to, but I don’t take many music clips even though we go to concerts or musicals at least once a fortnight, because it’s more fun to watch rather than hold up a phone or camera!

  • Linda Eaves

Sylvia! Thank you for all the tips and youtube videos. I will be careful with Cordi on the stairs. And she only goes on short walks. Really appreciate all the reminders, seriously. :)
