Yes Virginia, there is a chocolate cake. (Even after Weight Loss Surgery.)

by Linda Eaves on December 30, 2009

Went to coffee with a coworker who gave me a belated Christmas gift. At first I wasn’t sure I wanted it.

So – Weight Loss Surgery Myth Number One:
If you have weight loss surgery, you’ll never eat again.

Uh…Wrong. You eat. In fact, eating is a must. It’s still enjoyable, pleasurable, and all that. You just get ridiculously selective about what you put in there. Or at least I do.

Actually I’ve ran into this myth before. When I was in San Diego in February ’09 with my coaching group and mentioned my surgery decision, they were worried for me. Almost to the point of discouraging me from doing it, or at the very least postponing it. The reaction made me aware of how much misinformation and fear is out there. I was glad to be able to hear their concerns and it was an opportunity for us all to learn more about it.

For most of the day this conversation with my coworker kept coming up. Do people really think that you can’t eat, at all? So I called my bud Laree to talk about it. We talk about food (and screenplay writing) all the time. Over lunch. She admitted that before she knew me and another friend who’s had surgery – she too thought post surgery eating would be boring and very limited.

I’m glad to say that it’s not! I love to eat. I seek out high quality foods, I’m obsessed with labels and am interested in what’s in my food. I cook more and love finding creative ways to eat my favorites.

The bulk of my eating is non processed foods. Meaning – If I need a chemistry degree to pronounce what’s on the label, I tend to move on. Partially hydrogenated something? D-alpha-Tocopheryl Acid Succinate? = No. Here are the ingredients from my favorite sour cream. Ready? Grade A Cultured Cream. = Yes.
The simpler the better. It’s satisfying and I don’t need to eat the whole bucket.

If there’s a food I’ve got to try, I have some and enjoy it. I eat full fat, creamy, and sweet things. I didn’t mention it in the video, but I love fruit! Strawberries and raspberries are two of my favorites. I eat more raw food too, and if you’re curious about what that is, my friend Nathalie will show you.

And yes, there’s still chocolate cake and cheesecake.
In fact here’s one of my favorite chocolate cake recipes. Thanks Eggface!

Shelly's 5 minute SF Chocolate Cake - Mmm!

What are your thoughts or assumptions about this surgery? Leave a comment and let me know. I might just blog about it. I love comments, and my readers.

Have a great New Year’s Eve!

Absolutely 100% agree. Great blog entry.

There’s so much misinformation out there about weight loss surgery. It’s sad. One of the reasons I maintain my blog is to help dispel the crazy idea that post op eating is a life doomed to cottage cheese & protein shakes. No way.

Glad you love the chocolate cake :) TY for the shout out.
